Job Description
  • Supervise, mentor, assist, and assign tasks to estimating team as well as provide support to other Estimating Leads throughout the division.
  • Review outstanding tasks with team members and update priority list and/or projects and/or clients with any changes.
  • Manages and administers project estimating functions work assignments, sequencing of priorities, determination of staff resourcing and or equipment requirements, performance evaluations, etc.
  • Applies technical and leadership experience to oversee the preparation of Order of Magnitude and Definitive estimates.
  • Reviews Estimate Plans to ensure technical approach, set up, format, level of detail and organization is planned for.
  • Populates the necessary estimates/proposals documents such as clarifications lists, tender forms, work break down structures, rates schedules, etc.
  • Development of estimating basis identifying utilized estimating methodologies.
  • Participates in presentation of estimates/proposals to corporate management and or clients.
  • Identifies potential risks, opportunities, and alternative solutions.
  • Collectively maintains estimating historical benchmarking data base.
  • Development of estimating plan to establish estimate/proposal strategies.
  • Review contracts and interpret any cost impacts for the division/project.
  • Generate monthly progress reports for project/supervisors, clients as well as other functions.
  • Update estimate register with new project information.
  • Reviews estimates/proposals to ensure completeness, accuracy, and conformity to functional process.
  • Review technical, specifications and scope of work documents.Obtain revised documents from Flint Document Management System (FDMS) on a regular basis.
  • Generates required progress reporting providing updates on progress, projects, and current and or outstanding issues to management, projects, clients, and or other functional groups.
  • Ensures estimates are reviewed and approved according to policy.
  • Organize and participate in team as well as functional meetings; provide insight with regards to current/outstanding issues and weekly progress.
  • Attend and participate in site-visits, pre-bid meeting and post-bid meeting as required.
  • Collaborate with other functions, engineering firms, and vendors to enhance project success.
  • Provide recommendations and guidance to other Functional groups with regards to processes, monitoring and system requirements.
  • Provide assistance in resolving estimating matters during contract negotiations and execution, as required.
  • Provides independent reviews of estimates led by others.
  • Ensures all documentation is relevant and available to support the development of estimates/proposals.
  • Oversees the maintenance of estimate/proposal files as back-up for the estimate/proposal including accurate information on qualifications, labour rates, construction equipment rates, material pricing from suppliers, subcontract pricing from third parties vendors, benchmarks of historical productivity figures, etc.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum of college diploma/certificate required.
  • Registered for certification with one of the following organizations: -Alberta Society for Engineering Technologist (ASET), -Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering (AACE), -Alberta Quantity Surveyors Association (AQSA).
  • Expert computer skills: Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Estimating Software.
  • Intermediate computer skills: Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, Project), Auto CAD, 3-D Modeling Software, Primavera 6.
  • Minimum of 7 - 10 years experience required.
  • 10 years or more years of practical, hands on, and successful experience in organizing, preparing, and documenting estimates for Industrial construction projects would be considered equivalent, for the formal education requirement.
  • Thorough knowledge of estimating techniques, strategies, and industrial Construction.
  • Having excellent organizational, supervisory, and decision making/problem solving skills.
  • Ability to calculate mathematical extensions, analyze and understand construction drawings. associated documentation, contracts, cost coding systems, work breakdown structures, etc.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and to interface and to communicate effectively with others, having strong interpersonal skills and self-motivation.
  • Periodic visits to the project work site may be required.
